Harmonising standards to boost energy-efficient appliances and decarbonisation
Event Information
Time: 15 November 2024 at 9:00-10:00 GMT+4
Location: Livestreamed from COP29 Standards Pavilion, Blue Zone, B15.
The COP29 session addressed the critical role of energy efficiency in climate action, in particular relating to the goal of doubling energy efficiency improvements globally. It showcased successful regional standardisation and harmonisation experiences in hopes of triggering actions in other regions. The session featured a dialogue between regulators and standardisation bodies to accelerate standards harmonisation.
Most electrical appliances lack harmonised global energy efficiency standards. The session began with a presentation from the International Energy Agency on both the importance of energy efficiency to mitigate climate change more broadly as well as the role of efficient appliances and equipment in fostering climate action. A government representative highlighted how harmonised local standards have successfully advanced climate goals, with a focus on scaling these efforts globally. In addition, a major electrical appliance manufacturer demonstrated the benefits of supporting energy efficiency standards that enable greater interoperability and facilitate market entry, showing how this approach benefits not only climate goals but also the manufacturing sector. An engineer provided insights from a technical perspective. Finally, the session looked at how the International Electrotechnical Commission can set international standards for energy efficiency in electrical appliances, and how this message can be communicated through its national committees and taken forward for further action.
